Triumph Motorcycles has issued a recall for the Street Triple RS and Tiger 1200 in USA for all units produced between 2018 and 2020. The list also includes the Speed Triple RS, but that model is not sold in India.
According to the National Highway Transport Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US, the Brembo brake pads on these motorcycles have a high content of nickel and that increases their tendency of absorbing large amounts of water and salt. This in turn could accelerate the corrosion process and lead to the pads falling off the back plate, without warning. This will lead to a sudden brake failure as there's no brake pad and also cause brake disc damage due to contact between the back plate and the disc.
Triumph says that the brake pads will be replaced free of cost, however, it is yet to announce a recall date, considering the uncertainty around the global COVID-19 lockdown.
While the recall is applicable to units sold in the US, Triumph India has not issued a recall for the Street Triple RS and Tiger 1200. This could be because the problem may be specific to models sold in the USA and Triumph Motorcycles hasn't issued a global recall for them.
The Triumph Street Triple RS uses one of the best braking equipment on a motorcycle. It uses Brembo Monobloc M50 calipers that offer superb stopping power and was the top-shelf Brembo until the new Stylemas were introduced on motorcycles like the Panigale V4 and the new KTM 890 Duke R
The Triumph Street Triple RS was updated in late 2019 and that model went on sale in India recently. Click here to read our first ride review.
