Online bookings for Bajaj Chetak resume

  • Production came to a halt during the lockdown

  • Online bookings were suspended in May 2020

  • Deliveries expected to see a delay

Bajaj has reopened online bookings for its Chetak electric scooter. The company had suspended production due to the Coronavirus situation and the national lockdown, and this led to a pile-up of orders, forcing them to close bookings temporarily. Now, with the phased easing of the lockdown, Bajaj has begun accepting bookings online. The bike maker has also resumed operations at its Chakan facility, where the Chetak is built.

However, deliveries are expected to be delayed. At the time of the suspension of production, Bajaj mentioned that bookings made in February 2020 would be shipped by September 2020. And now, the time gap between bookings and deliveries is set to expand, unless Bajaj ramps up production and distribution.

The Bajaj Chetak e-scooter was launched in India on January 14, 2020, and it went on sale in Pune and Bengaluru. More cities will be added later.

The electric scooter is available in two variants, Urbane and Premium, with prices starting at Rs 1 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune and Bengaluru). The Premium model gets metallic colour options, a dark/light tan seat, metallic-coloured wheels and a disc brake at the front. The Urbane model, meanwhile, misses out on the metallic colour option and uses a drum brake at the front.

The Chetak is powered by a 4.1 kW electric motor with a top speed of 80kph. It has an IP67-rated battery with a claimed battery range of 55-75km, depending on the ride mode. You can read about what it's like to ride here. As far as competition is concerned, the Chetak goes up against the TVS iQube and the Ather 450x.
