2022 Kawasaki KLR650 revealed

The Kawasaki KLR650 has made its return. For 2022, the Japanese manufacturer has reintroduced its iconic dual-sport motorcycle and while it stays true to its roots, it is an all-new motorcycle and features a host of updates over its predecessor.

  • Features a reworked engine, now with fuel-injection

  • Gets a wider handlebar and more relaxed ergonomics

  • Changes made to the suspension and brakes

Kawasaki KLR650 engine

The KLR650 is powered by a 652cc, single-cylinder, DOHC, liquid-cooled engine. This new model now gets fuel-injection. More notable changes have been made to the exhaust system; the exhaust pipe diameter has been reduced by 7.7mm and Kawasaki says it’s done so to “improve mid-range torque characteristics to better suit everyday riding.“

Furthermore, updates have been made to the clutch and transmission. The clutch-release bearings have been changed from ball to thrust-needle bearings, the gear dogs and shift fork have been revised on third gear, and a new finishing treatment has been used for the fourth and fifth gear.

A new sealed battery adds to the convenience and is significantly lighter than the previous one. The starter, ignition coil, and evaporator canister have all been revised and are now lighter than on previous models.

Kawasaki KLR650 chassis

The new KLR650 continues to use a semi-double-cradle frame but has received several updates – the rear frame is now integrated with the main frame, the swingarm is 30mm longer and also features a 2mm larger pivot shaft.

Suspension is handled by a 41mm front fork that offers an impressive 200mm of suspension travel, while the rear comprises a monoshock with 185mm of travel. The rear suspension can be adjusted for preload and rebound.

The front brake is now a larger 300mm disc that should deliver better braking performance. The rear disc, meanwhile, is thicker by 1mm to provide better heat dissipation under heavy braking. Additionally, the disc shape has been changed from a petal-type to a round disc.

The KLR650 features a 21-inch front wheel and a 17-inch rear wheel. Kawasaki has mentioned in its press release that a stronger material has been used for the rear wheel.

Kawasaki KLR650 ergonomics

On the upcoming KLR650, the foot pegs have been pushed out by 10mm, allowing for better ergonomics with the new handlebar that is also wider by the same dimension. Both are now rubber-mounted to reduce vibrations. The windscreen has been raised by 2 inches as well and allows for an additional 1-inch of adjustability.

Kawasaki KLR650 features

New for 2022 is an LCD instrument cluster, an integrated accessory mounting bar, two optional power sockets and LED headlights.

Kawasaki KLR650 price and variants

Internationally, the 2022 Kawasaki KLR650 will be available as two models – one with ABS and one without. Additionally, there will be two variants – the KLR650 Adventure and the KLR650 Traveler. The Adventure features a set of 21-litre panniers, LED auxiliary lights, engine guards, and two power sockets. The Traveler, on the other hand, comes with two power sockets and a 42-liter top case.

The 2022 KLR 650 has been priced at $6,699 (Rs 4.88 lakh) for the non-ABS model, $6,999 (Rs 5.10 lakh) with ABS, $7,399 (Rs 5.39 lakh) for the Traveler and $7,999 (Rs 5.83 lakh) for the Adventure. The KLR models have never been available in India, and it’s unlikely Kawasaki will bring it down here anytime soon.
